THE FIELD NOTES
OF AN
UNCONVENTIONAL
LIFE.

A life is not a controlled experiment. But it can generate better questions.

Eighteen notes on school, work, a former view from behind a shop counter, independent learning, relationships, research and the strange craft of making things. Every note asks what was seen, what was inferred, and what another explanation might be.

Author-reported background · editorial reconstructions marked · no psychological scorecards or fabricated anecdotes.

The observer is
inside the experiment.

This archive does not ask you to admire an unusual career path. It asks you to inspect how someone explains a life—and how those explanations could be wrong.

There is no impartial camera in autobiography. A person remembers some episodes, omits others, changes vocabulary over time, and knows how the story ends. That creates an unusually rich source of questions and a very weak basis for universal laws. An experience can be true as reported while the explanation attached to it remains incomplete.

The notes draw on the author's reported educational, professional and creative chapters. An “initial reading” is usually a retrospective editorial reconstruction, not an authenticated quote from an earlier diary. An illustrative composite is called exactly that. Sources illuminate concepts; they do not certify a person's memories.

THE SMALL RULE

Observation: what could be described without assigning motive.
Interpretation: the meaning we provisionally give it.
Revision: what survives comparison with alternatives.

02 / METHOD, NOT MYTHOLOGY

A notebook with
four kinds of ink.

A public account should make it possible to disagree with its explanations without accusing its narrator of dishonesty. These four labels describe different claims, not four rankings of human worth.

01Reported context

A background fact supplied by the author; identified as such unless externally checked.

02Interpretation

A present editorial explanation, open to rival accounts.

03Hypothesis

A testable possibility. Plausible is not validated.

04Illustrative composite

An invented general situation for reasoning—not the author's claimed experience.

A caution on “I used to think”: when no earlier document exists, the site uses “initial reading · reconstruction” instead of inventing personal recollections.

A caution on research: cited academic work supports particular general propositions. It does not validate the author's Identity–Action Gap synthesis, scent ideas, organisational conclusions or any personal score.

FIELD / 01Education

Credentials are maps, not the territory

A credential can open a door and offer a common language; it cannot tell you how someone behaves when a problem is novel, ambiguous or emotionally expensive.

Context

Formal study: commerce and an MBA

Observation

A credential can open a door and offer a common language; it cannot tell you how someone behaves when a problem is novel, ambiguous or emotionally expensive.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The temptation is to read a degree as a complete measure of capability. That is a reconstruction of a common assumption, not a remembered private thought.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Credentials are bounded signals. Look for demonstrated work, opportunity to practise and conditions that make ability visible.

What supports this

The educational background is author-reported. The distinction between performance signals and transfer is an editorial argument, not an estimate of this author’s ability.

What remains unknown

We cannot infer how much of any skill came from a course, peers, practice or selection into the programme.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

If a qualification vanished from a résumé, what evidence of learning would remain?

Source & method note

Dunlosky et al. (2013) reviews study strategies; it does not assess this person. Read source [S1]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

The examination is one kind of question

Examinations reward doing certain things within a bounded time and format. Those constraints make comparison possible, but also determine which abilities are least visible.

Context

Formal education; assessment as a social institution

Observation

Examinations reward doing certain things within a bounded time and format. Those constraints make comparison possible, but also determine which abilities are least visible.

Initial reading · reconstruction

One might initially equate measurable achievement with educational value. This is an analytical starting point, not an autobiographical quotation.

More careful reading · current editorial position

A better reading treats scores as answers to particular questions—not a verdict on curiosity, kindness, judgement or future learning.

What supports this

Evidence about retrieval practice shows that testing can improve retention in some learning designs; it does not mean every exam is well designed.

What remains unknown

This archive has no causal analysis of particular schools, teachers or exams.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

What was your most useful learning that no examination ever asked you to demonstrate?

Source & method note

Roediger & Karpicke (2006) addresses memory tests and later retention, not school ranking. Read source [S2]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

Context

Transition from structured education to self-directed study

Observation

Later independent learning gives room to select questions and sequence projects; it also removes timetables, feedback and external standards.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The attractive story is liberation from credentials and teachers. That would ignore the scaffolding institutions sometimes supply.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Autonomy and structure are not enemies. A good independent learner deliberately borrows disciplines such as retrieval, critique and deadlines where useful.

What supports this

The move into independent learning is author-reported. Published evidence supports certain study techniques but not the claim that one pathway fits all.

What remains unknown

Which practices have actually improved this author’s retention, rather than the feeling of understanding, has not been measured.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

What would a fair test of your own learning look like a month later?

Source & method note

Dunlosky et al. (2013) compares techniques; transfer requires context. Read source [S1]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

FIELD / 04Earlier corporate work

Context

Earlier work in corporate settings

Observation

Organizations contain formal titles, unofficial expertise, incentives and relationships. One cannot reconstruct a particular colleague or incident from this observation.

Initial reading · reconstruction

A tidy chart can invite the idea that decision-making authority follows reporting lines without friction. This is a conceptual foil, not a recorded belief.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Ask who holds information, who bears consequences and whose cooperation is needed. Formal authority matters, but it is not the only source of coordination.

What supports this

Past corporate employment is author-reported; this note makes a general interpretation, not a factual allegation about any employer.

What remains unknown

Without documents or perspectives from coworkers, there is no basis for attributing motives, dysfunction or success to specific teams.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

Which decision in your workplace is hard to explain using the org chart alone?

Context

Earlier corporate work; performance measurement

Observation

Targets focus attention and make trade-offs visible. They can also conceal work that matters but is costly to count: mentoring, listening, exception handling and dignity.

Initial reading · reconstruction

A tempting first read treats what is measured as what is important. It is easier to manage a number than a contested definition of value.

More careful reading · current editorial position

A metric should be read beside its incentives and omissions. Ask how it was constructed, who benefits, and what a sensible employee could do to optimise it without improving the underlying goal.

What supports this

This is an analytical composite grounded in general workplace experience, not a report about a real target or company policy.

What remains unknown

We lack internal measurement data and cannot judge any former employer’s systems.

Context

Earlier exposure to a family retail business, not a current daily role

Observation

A small shop brings prices, trust, repetition, interruptions and local relationships into the same setting. What looks like a quick transaction to an outsider may rest on years of tacit knowledge.

Initial reading · reconstruction

An observer can mistake convenience for simplicity and assume shop decisions are reducible to spreadsheets.

More careful reading · current editorial position

The counter is a vantage point, not a representative sample. Customers seen there are selected by geography, income, hours and habit.

What supports this

Earlier family-business exposure is author-reported. No identifiable customer anecdotes or current field observations are claimed.

What remains unknown

We do not know how typical that shop’s customers or interactions were of wider retail, Delhi or India.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

Whose experiences would a shop-based account systematically miss?

Source & method note

Hernán & Robins (2020) is a methodological guide to causal inference, not a study of this shop. Read source [S5]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

Context

Prior family enterprise exposure; a wider economic question

Observation

An ordinary product passes through farmers, transporters, wholesalers, retailers and households. The person who finishes the last step makes a contribution without becoming the sole creator of the chain.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The easy narrative credits the most visible individual—the founder, seller or final assembler—with the whole outcome.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Separate authorship, stewardship, ownership rights and value added. Recognising interdependence does not erase the skill of the person who puts the pieces together.

What supports this

The author’s family business background is reported. The supply-chain argument is an interpretive analogy, not documentary evidence about any supplier.

What remains unknown

Individual contractual rights and relative contributions would require a concrete case and records.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

When you say “I made this”, which other contributions are you leaving outside the frame?

Source & method note

Schön (1983) offers a lens on professional knowledge; the analogy is the author’s. Read source [S3]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

FIELD / 08Independent learning

Self-direction still needs witnesses

Context

Present period of independent exploration

Observation

Working independently makes it easier to follow a question across subjects, but easier too to mistake fluency or output volume for tested competence.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The initial interpretation can be “more hours and more artefacts must mean more learning”. Here that sentence is an editorial hypothesis, not a diary entry.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Distinguish production, deliberate practice, outside feedback and durable understanding. Ask what changed after critique, not merely what was published.

What supports this

Independent study and substantial creative output are author-reported; no controlled comparison or learning score is available.

What remains unknown

We cannot know whether the work generalises beyond familiar tasks without independent tests.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

What is one project you could show a sceptic alongside the strongest objection to it?

Context

An interdisciplinary path across work, research, technology and creative practice

Observation

A coherent life story is often written after the fact. Real choices are made with partial information and shifting preferences. Apparent inconsistency can signal learning—or avoidance.

Initial reading · reconstruction

An attractive account connects every past decision to one inevitable present purpose. That would be a polished narrative, not strong evidence.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Record what changed and which new observation justified the change; keep alternatives open, including that the decision was mistaken.

What supports this

Breadth of interests is author-reported. The specific causal reasons for changing directions have not been independently reconstructed.

What remains unknown

We do not have contemporaneous records of each decision or a counterfactual career.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

Which opinion changed for a reason you can state without making your past self foolish?

Source & method note

Loftus (2005) warns that memory can be changed by later information. Read source [S6]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

FIELD / 10Independent learning

Context

Several simultaneous learning and building interests

Observation

When there are many possible projects, choosing one means temporarily not choosing many others. Scarcity of time creates real trade-offs, even when every option has merit.

Initial reading · reconstruction

It is easy to moralise unfinished work as evidence of character. Equally easy to excuse every missed commitment as creativity.

More careful reading · current editorial position

A more disciplined account asks what was promised, what displaced it, and whether a deliberately narrower scope would preserve the core question.

What supports this

Multiple active interests are author-reported. No claim about a medical explanation, attention disorder or clinical trait follows.

What remains unknown

There is no logged time-use dataset from which to quantify causes of interruptions.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

Which unfinished idea deserves release, and which deserves an honest ending?

Source & method note

Kahneman & Klein (2009) is a caution about expertise; not an attention diagnostic. Read source [S4]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

Context

Beginner exploration of perfume and emotion-themed concepts

Observation

A smell can evoke associations and invite conversation about mood or memory. The same formula may mean very different things to different people.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The seductive leap is from a meaningful personal scent experience to a universal psychological claim about what a fragrance does.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Treat fragrance as craft and invitation. Test preference, wear and storytelling separately; do not promise emotional outcomes or medical benefit.

What supports this

The author reports experimental perfumery and concepts. No clinical trial, consumer outcome dataset or safety claim is presented.

What remains unknown

Which users respond positively, for how long, and under what conditions remain unanswered.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

What can this creation genuinely promise—and what would be overreach?

Source & method note

Loftus (2005) concerns memory malleability; it does not validate scent effects. Read source [S6]. The citation informs a concept; it does not verify this personal interpretation.

FIELD / 12Creative projects

Context

Building interconnected static creative sites

Observation

A small interactive page can turn a claim into an observable question: click, compare, notice a limitation, follow the primary evidence. More pages do not automatically mean more understanding.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The first instinct can be to count launches as proof of audience value or technical quality. That is a possible vanity metric, not a documented belief.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Judge by comprehension, accessibility, factual transparency, maintainability and whether a stranger can do something meaningful. An amusing interface still needs an honest boundary.

What supports this

The public hub and several experiments are observable online. Their audience impact and full accessibility have not been independently audited here.

What remains unknown

We lack longitudinal visitor studies, code audits of each project and measures of downstream usefulness.

Interpersonal judgement without private anecdotes

Observation

People may respond, withdraw, delay or disagree for many reasons. A message received is observable; a hidden intention is usually inferred.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The mind naturally turns sparse signals into a story about affection, contempt or certainty. That can feel compelling while remaining underdetermined.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Attend to patterns and stated boundaries; do not use isolated responses as mind-reading instruments. When appropriate, ask clearly rather than prosecuting an imagined motive.

What supports this

No identifiable interactions, private messages or claims about any third party appear here. This is explicitly an illustrative composite.

What remains unknown

Another person’s inner life remains unavailable without their account; even their account can have limits.

Observation

A compliment, a rejection and silence each supply some information. None alone can stand in for a population of readers or collaborators.

Initial reading · reconstruction

One might swing between “they loved it, therefore it is excellent” and “they ignored it, therefore it is worthless.” Those are proposed traps, not documented emotional episodes.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Notice who was willing and able to respond, what they observed, and whether their critique identifies a testable improvement.

What supports this

The author publishes work publicly. No confidential reviews, endorsements or audience results are asserted.

What remains unknown

The missing replies, sampling mechanism and differences in reader goals are unknown.

TAKE THIS QUESTION

Which piece of feedback suggests a specific revision rather than a verdict on your worth?

Context

Developing an independent conceptual inquiry into intention and behaviour

Observation

A sincere identity—“I value this”—does not by itself explain what someone does when opportunity, emotion, ability and incentives collide.

Initial reading · reconstruction

The initial framing searches for a single factor behind unrealised intention. That framing is not claimed as a dated personal belief.

More careful reading · current editorial position

A useful model should distinguish goals from actions, explain context, specify measures and outperform existing accounts in prospective tests.

What supports this

A public proposed Identity–Action Gap framework exists. Its specific synthesis is not presented as peer-reviewed or empirically validated.

What remains unknown

Whether identity adds predictive value beyond existing behavioural theories remains open.

Firsthand experience can reveal phenomena overlooked by neat frameworks. It can also be atypical, remembered selectively and influenced by the act of observing.

Initial reading · reconstruction

A story that fits a theory can feel like proof. Yet it may have been selected precisely because it fit.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Use personal experience to generate hypotheses, then seek rival cases, records, multiple viewpoints and predictions made before outcomes.

What supports this

The life context is author-reported. The methodological claims draw on general research about memory, causal inference and self-report.

What remains unknown

This collection cannot estimate frequency or causal effect in a population.

Using generative AI as a drafting and reviewing aid

Observation

One model can draft a page and another can audit it. A different answer may reveal a bug or add one; agreement may reflect shared training and assumptions.

Initial reading · reconstruction

It is tempting to call any rewrite an improvement because it sounds more polished. Polished text is not equivalent to correct code.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Write acceptance tests, inspect diffs and check accessibility, links, security and claims in the built artefact. Treat AI as an instrument in a process, not a guarantor.

What supports this

The author reports iterative AI-assisted building. No claim is made about the tools writing everything, their independence or error rates.

What remains unknown

We do not have a benchmark of AI edits versus human reviews for these particular sites.

The apparent abundance of production can suggest that every new subdomain is progress. More surface area can also multiply upkeep and confusion.

More careful reading · current editorial position

Choose the smallest useful claim, make the interaction real, and preserve a route back to the whole project. A lightweight website can be richer than a heavy one.

What supports this

The public project network is observable. Performance, security and reader value require page-specific checks, not metaphors about overclocking.

What remains unknown

Which future maintenance costs will emerge, and how readers navigate the network, are not yet measured.

04 / THREE CASES TO THINK WITH

When the story
feels too neat.

CASE A / STUDY

A perfect exam answer

Two learners obtain the same score. One retrieves ideas a month later; the other cannot. The score was not imaginary—it measured a narrower event than we hoped.

Rival account: differences in test format or opportunity, not just study habits, might explain the gap.

CASE B / WORK

Silence in a meeting

A colleague says little. Is it apathy, careful listening, lack of context, fear of consequences, or simple exhaustion? The observation underdetermines the motive.

CASE C / MAKING

The impressive launch

A page goes live and looks polished. That demonstrates publication, not comprehension, resilience, accessibility or effect on anyone's decisions.

Rival account: a tiny tool that answers one question may be more useful.

All three are illustrative scenarios, not reports of real students, employees or clients.

05 / THE REFRAMING DESK

Take one thought

07 / CRITICAL APPENDIX

The honest limits
of one person's story.

Selection bias is built into the notebook

The notes that get written are not a random sample of a life. They privilege events easy to remember, narrate and connect to a theme. Public projects are visible; abandoned drafts, routine labour, outside help, and unflattering failures can be less so. An argument cannot be made representative by being vivid. No estimate of what “usually” happens in the world follows from these 18 choices.

Memory is reconstructive

Retelling an episode can change its significance. Later vocabulary—“agency,” “friction,” “capital”—may make yesterday sound more theoretically coherent than it was. That is why no reconstructed initial belief is presented as a dated quote. Loftus's research addresses one route by which memories can be influenced; it does not establish any particular memory here as false. [S6]

Introspection is evidence with limits

Even a sincere person can be mistaken about what caused a decision. Nisbett and Wilson's influential review argues that explanations of mental processes may rely partly on plausible causal theories rather than direct access. Their work does not imply all self-report is useless. It says to match confidence to method. [S8]

Survivorship and missing comparisons

A finished website is easy to link. The unpublished attempts, time costs and different starting conditions are harder to see. A life with a visible project archive is not a controlled comparison with people who chose another route, had different resources or had no reason to publish. When thinking about causes, consult the logic of causal inference rather than a compelling origin story. [S5]

Publication is not peer review

Identity–Action Gap remains a proposed independent inquiry, not a demonstrated law. An essay about human capital is an argument, not an intervention trial. These notes are public reasoning rather than validated findings. Readers are invited to challenge each layer separately.
